This university reform sucks...

Another week went by, one week closer to midterms and finals. This year is a little bit different. We don't have revision week(s) before exams nor the traditional exam weeks.

We have, instead, midterms and finals successively until the end of the semester.

Let me explain...
At the beginning of this year, the government decided that university students should be evaluated throughout the semester to help them succeed in their studies rather than giving them one and only chance at the end of the semester. It seems fair, right?

In order to do so, they added more midterms and decided that a final exam should be carried out only a couple of weeks after the class ends (two to three weeks max, if possible).

As a consequence, we have finals immediately after the end of one course instead of having all the exams in the exam weeks at the end of the semester. Up to this point, the reform seems relatively reasonable.

However, the problem is that these exams could be scheduled while there are other classes are going on, including tutorial or seminar-style classes. And also the professors had the genius idea of shift the beginning of some of the classes so that all the exams wouldn't all be on the same week.

Thus, we will have a couple of exams per week for many weeks, and by the time all the midterms are done, the finals will start... GREAT!!

In the end, you end up with an insane amount of workload. You need to, first of all, go to the lectures and tutorials, re-read your lecture notes, prepare for tutorials, and on top of all those revisions, you need to study for exams.

The third-year students usually have two courses that have tutorials that go hand in hand with lectures. In my case, those are the special contract law and the corporate (or company) law. The professors expect us to put in at least one and a half days of preparation in order to prepare for a tutorial that is held once a week, which means we need three days a week for the two tutorials. And you'll need to take care of other courses and exams on the other days. And you could also eat and sleep like a normal person if you wish.

Basically, this reform sucks. And everyone thinks it sucks. There's a petition going around at the university to change the current awful situation. We shall see how it goes...

I hope things are better at your place, wherever you are. Thanks for reading. See you again soon.
